A brief lesson plan
Teaching material:
Module 10, Unit 3, Reading
Teaching objective:
By the end of this lesson, the students will
• acquire some knowledge about Aids, strengthen the awareness of self-protection against Aids;
• be able to identify the features of a news special by comparing and analyzing the similarities and differences among briefs, news and news specials;
• be able to identify the topics of paragraphs by analyzing the logic between sentences, optimizing their thinking character;
• be able to identify the topic of the text by building the logic between paragraphs, optimizing their thinking character;
• be able to recognize the purpose of writing a news special and identify the meaning beyond the text, developing their empathy in getting close to Aids issue;
• be able to write a piece of news with information from the news special.
Teaching procedures:
OREO Daily Talk
1. The students have 3-5 minutes to give a free OREO talk about a topic.
O-Opening (by interpreting a proverb or summarizing a short passage)
R-Reinterpreting (by telling your understanding of the proverb or the passage)
E-Example (Giving an example to support your understanding)
O-Opinion (Closing with an opinion or a comment)

2. Read two newspaper texts and recognize the features of the news texts.

3. Read the news special and recognize its features.
Get the students make sense of the structure of a news special by asking questions:
Scan the News special (专题资讯)and answer(1): 
a. Whats the event reported in the first paragraph?
b. Whats the last paragraph about?
c. Whats the information about in the other parts of the news special? Is it all Ajani and his family?
Hamburg structure
Scan the News special (专题资讯)and answer(2): 
a. Why does the writer start the news special with the death of Ajani’s mother?
b. Is the first paragraph developed in a more detailed way? What does it help to build?
c. Why does the news special take in much information about Aids?

Identify the textual topic
4.Locate the key words of each sentence to spot the topic of a paragraph, using concept maps. Summarize the ways to organize information in a paragraph.
5. Build the logic between paragraphs.
Join the topic sentences to form a short passage, using linking words:

2) What are you most impressed with in this news special?
3) What do you learn form this news special?
4) Will you shake hands or have dinner with Aids patients?
5) Will you hug people with HIV or talk with them?
6) Will you marry a person with HIV?    
7) What will you do to help Ajani if you are a journalist?
