Teacher’s sheet

Drills:

1. A daily speech about a quote

Make a short speech about the quote “Where there is life there is hope”.
(I) As long as you are alive, you should be hopeful, because it is possible that your situation will improve.
(R) However bad life may seem, there is always something you can do, and succeed at.
(E) For example, the victims in earthquakes, tsunamis, wars or dreadful diseases should have the right to end their lives, if they want to. But they never did so. On the contrary, they keep standing up. They believe there is no challenge so great or so difficult that it cannot be overcome.
(C) So whenever and wherever we are trapped in adversity, do not look down at your feet but look up at the stars. Keep in mind that where there is life, there is hope.

2. Explore how to interpret the theme of a quote
describe the literal meaning
The land did not move, but moved. The sea was not still, yet still.
(I)The land you stand on seems not to be moving, but it is actually moving because the earth is running. Similarly, the sea is moving deep, but it seems still on the surface.
(R)A Chinese saying goes that still waters run deep. This is true of people.
(E)For example, one seems to be calm but his inner self is passionate, while one seems to be passionate, but his inner self is calm and he can always keep his head.
The harder I work, the more luck I seem to have.
(I) It means the harder you work, the more luck will smiles on you. The quote comes from a proverb said by Thomas Jefferson. He said, “I am a great believer in luck. I find that the harder I work, the more I have of it.”
(R)My understanding of it is that the harder you work, the more chances you will have to succeed.
(E)For example, if you have an ambition but you don’t make any effort to realize it or even will not give it a try, you will never have a chance to make your ambition realized. A Chinese saying also goes “better spinning than desiring the fish near the pool. It is better to start weaving your fishing nets than merely coveting(mouth watering) fish at the water.
(C)So don’t spare your effort because fortune only favours diligence.
disclose the implication
The outer world you see is a reflection of your inner self.
(I)What you see reflects what you think.
(R)Your thoughts decide the way you look at the things around you.
(E)As a saying goes, beauty lies in the lover's eyes. If you love someone, you often love his or her dog. If you hate someone, anything about him is bad.
(C)So don’t let your eyes blinded by your thoughts.

(I)What you see reflects what you think.
(R)Your thoughts decide the way you look at the things around you.
(E)If you receive a piece of love letter today, the drizzling day is a romantic day, a fantastic day and an unforgettable day. If your letter is rejected, you may think the drizzling day is a depressing day and a heartbroken day.
(C)So don’t let your eyes blinded by your thoughts.

We don’t see things as they are, we see them as we are.

If the world seems cold to you, kindle fires to warm it.

The longest day has an end.

decode from different perspectives
No matter how far you may fly, never forget where you come from.
your hometown:
No matter where you go or where you are, remember your family, your hometown and your country, and whatever you do, it matters much about the honour of your hometown or your country.
your helper:
No matter what a great person you have become, remember the people who have helped you and pass on their favour to others.
the hardship you’ve experienced:
No matter what achievements you have made, remember the hardship you have experienced and treasure what you have got. Do keep in mind that nothing comes in an easy way. It didn’t in the past, it doesn’t now and will not ever. Be prepared to overcome difficulties in the future.
your starting point:
No matter how successful you are now and how far you have gone, remember your starting point and take your present place as a new starting point. Keep on going and reach your potential to its fullest for new achievements.

3. Explore how to give examples
Provide examples about yourself, you and others or you and the world .

4. Learn how to make a closing
Make a comment or a summary, similar in meaning but expressed in a different way

Cybercrime refers to any criminal offence that is related to the Internet. The Internet crimes can be classified into four categories. First come the crimes related to a lack of proper Internet security, such as downloading or deleting other people’s files without permission, and spreading computer viruses. The second kind of crimes are usually committed without a computer, but they can occur over the Internet. For example, some criminals use the Internet to cheat others of their money. Another kind of crimes use websites to spread offensive information or encourage hatred and violence. Last of all are those offences related to intellectual property (intellectual property is a design, patent, book, film, etc., that the law prevents other people from copying). It is important to classify the cybercrimes because it helps us assess the problem of cybercrime. /All internet users are affected by cybercrime in one way or the other.

Aids is not something that we can simply ignore. Education is a powerful weapon we can use to fight Aids. How can education help us fight Aids?
Schools should include information on the deadly disease in Biology classes. In this way, students will learn more about the disease and how it spreads.Teachers should teach students not to discriminate against people with disease. It is hard for Aids patients to suffer the additional pain caused by discrimination.
To conclude, Aids education is the best way to protect ourselves from this terrible disease.

Stand-up is a kind of comedy that is done on a stage by a comedian talking straight to audience members.
There are a variety of different styles of stand-up comedy. Some comedians tell jokes about the way people behave or about daily life. Other comedians rely on visual humour. Their humour may be inspired by objects. Yet other comedians may trip over chairs, walk into doors, and fall down on stage in order to make people laugh. This kind of absurd humour is not very funny if you are only listening and not watching the comedian’s performance. The last kind of comedian does impressions-he or she will act or speak like a well-known person in order to make fun of that person. These are the popular types of stand-up comedy, which many comedians play but only a few of them become famous.
One of such few people is Billy Cristal. He is popular with all age groups and has the ability to amuse people all over the world. This proves that stand-up can be enjoyed by everyone.

Sample 1
In the above picture we can see a runner competing in a race. He is running hard and will successfully reach the finish line, which, however, is also the start line.
The picture implies that the runner will finish this race, but it doesn’t mean he can stop making efforts, because more competitions and challenges are to come in future.
So it is with every one of us in life and work. When saying good bye to the past on New Year’s Eve, we are also looking ahead to the future. After successfully walking in outer space, scientists are attempting to conquer the Mars. When one year’s graduates leave school, teachers are already preparing for next year’s new students. Harvest time is also a time when farmers begin to sow seeds. New products are springing up to replace the old ones with people’s continuous efforts.
In a word, the finish line is also the start line. As a student, I’ll never stop working hard while I’m enjoying the pleasure from making progress.

Sample 2:
As is vividly illustrated above, success is like an iceberg floating in the sea. Only a small part of it can be seen while most of it is invisible under the water.
When talking about success, people often fix their mind on success itself, ignoring some hidden factors. I hold the belief that although dedication, hard work and discipline are key elements of success, failure and sacrifice are also significant. Those who are unwilling to be persistent will end in failure. On the whole, hard work is the leading factor.
As to me, I was weak in English in the past. Inspired by the teacher and friends, I determined to improve my English with the guidance of Success Iceberg. Though faced with several failure, I was dedicated to English and still worked hard on it. With persistence and discipline, I made great progress in the end. I believe if we concentrate on the hidden factors and put them into action, we are bound to success.
